The emergence of MSA, a world leader in worker safety and protective gear innovation, is linked to a terrible industrial tragedy. On the morning of 26 March 1912, an explosion occurred at the Jed Mine in West Virginia. More than 80 miners died as a result of the instantaneous methane fire. After this tragedy, mine engineer John T. Ryan Sr. said to himself, “If I could spend my life doing what I know how to do to reduce the likelihood of similar mishaps in the future, I would live a life worth living.”
Ryan invited his colleague George H. Dyke to collaborate to realise his vision for the new company. Recognising the urgent need for reliable, safe mining equipment, they immediately turned to one of their country’s greatest minds, Thomas Edison. The famous inventor helped Ryan and Dyke create an electric head lamp that over the next 25 years reduced mine explosions by 75 per cent. Edison himself later said that it was his invention that benefited mankind the most.
Over the next decades, MSA remained at the forefront of the fight for safety in the workplace. The company began offering compact first aid kits and portable methane analysers, and mastered new technologies to create state-of-the-art thermal imaging cameras, ballistic helmets and advanced gas and flame detection systems.
But the company has never forgotten how it came to be and what it is working for. It’s called The Safety Company, and for good reason: its primary goal is to provide users with reliable, high quality products, devices and services that should help them get home from work safe and sound.
